AT LAST, ELECTORAL COMMISSION CONDUCTS VOTERS' REGISTRATION
Starting from today (and for the next ten days), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would at last commence the task of compiling a new voters' register. When this exercise is completed, it would signify the first major step in conducting of all elections, perhaps starting with the often-postponed local council elections. The exercise when successfully would douse some of the fear and anxiety that had been raised about the conduct of elections in 2003 and INEC's ability to conduct the transition. (Guardian)

President Olusegun Obasanjo acknowledged Wednesday that he ordered military operations in 1999 and 2001 in which hundreds of civilians were killed -- but insisted he had acted to "save lives and property." (CNN)

OBASANJO DEFENDS HIS RECORD

As voter registration gets underway on Thursday in BiafraNigeria ahead of forthcoming national elections, President Olusegun Obasanjo has released a statement strongly defending his record in power. (BBC)
