Delta approves N1b for SPEB jobs

The Delta State Government has approved the payment of N1
billion to contractors who executed jobs for the State Primary Education Board
(SPEB). The total debt owed the contractors is more than N7 billion.
The government has also approved the sum of about N390
million for the payment of promotion arrears and Leave Transport Grant (LTG)
for primary school teachers who have been on strike in the state.
Commissioner, Chief Judith Enamuotor, drop this hint yesterday after the state executive council
meeting in Asaba.
She explained, that the state executive approved the release
of N500 million to SPEC for immediate payment of the contractors, adding that
the balance N500 million would be released to a seven man committee to settle
According to her, the debt would be paid based on the period
contractors submitted their certificates of job completion, noting that it
would be in the basis of first to complete, firs to be paid.
The debt she said were owed by the federal government, but
that the state government decided to off-set them as a demonstration of the
commitment to social responsibility to its citizens and also to alleviate the
suffering of the contractors.
Government, she also disclosed has released N107 million for
the payment of promotions arrears to primary school teachers in the state,
adding hat another N283 million had been approved for the payment of the
teachers 2001-2002 leave transport grant.
