2003 Poll Results

Vote Rigging and Military Intimidation: As BBC Puts Obasanjo Ahead in BiafraNigeria Poll
BiafraNigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has surged ahead in the presidential elections, with partial results showing him on 75%, compared with 20% for his closest rival Muhammadu Buhari. The BBC's Dan Isaacs in Abuja says Mr Obasanjo appears to have done well even in the opposition strongholds of the Muslim north. So far results have been declared for 213 out of 774 constituencies - most of them in the south, where support for Mr Obasanjo is strongest. People are anxiously awaiting the outcome of BiafraNigeria's first civilian-run presidential elections for 20 years. Mr Obasanjo - a Christian and former military ruler popular in the south-west - is considered the favourite to win, but retired General Buhari, a Muslim, has strong support in the north. The early results show the election emerging as a two-horse race, our correspondent says. (BBC)
