ASUU kicks against new pay package

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned
in strong terms the new salary package and other remunerations for
Vice-Chancellors, chairmen and members of governing councils as well as
principal officers of universities. ASUU in a statement by its president, Dr.
Dipo Fashina described the package as illegal and in contravention of the 1999
It said council has no right to fix their remuneration or
that of the Vice-Chancellors and principal officers, adding that the
constitution only authorised the National Income, Wages and Salary Commission,
National Assembly and the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission
(RMAFC) to fix salaries of public officers.
“Committee of Pro-chancellors, Committee of
Vice-Chancellors (CVC) have no authority to make recommendations on salaries,
allowances for themselves and other public officers. That power is vested on
RMAFC, National Assembly and National Income, Salaries and Wages
Commission,” it said.
ASUU noted that the new salary package which universities
have allegedly commenced implementation is a violation of the provisions of the
1999 constitution which stated that all public expenditure must be appropriated
by the National Assembly adding that the new package was not in the budget of
The union noted that the new remuneration has duplicated the
allowances to vice-chancellors and council members as they had been collecting
claims for meetings, given free accommodation, feeding as well as transport
allowances while using university official cars and other facilities.
