The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned in strong terms the new salary package and other remunerations for Vice-Chancellors, chairmen and members of governing councils as well as principal officers of universities. ASUU in a statement by its president, Dr. Dipo Fashina described the package as illegal and in contravention of the 1999 constitution.

It said council has no right to fix their remuneration or that of the Vice-Chancellors and principal officers, adding that the constitution only authorised the National Income, Wages and Salary Commission, National Assembly and the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to fix salaries of public officers.

“Committee of Pro-chancellors, Committee of Vice-Chancellors (CVC) have no authority to make recommendations on salaries, allowances for themselves and other public officers. That power is vested on RMAFC, National Assembly and National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission,” it said.

ASUU noted that the new salary package which universities have allegedly commenced implementation is a violation of the provisions of the 1999 constitution which stated that all public expenditure must be appropriated by the National Assembly adding that the new package was not in the budget of any university.

The union noted that the new remuneration has duplicated the allowances to vice-chancellors and council members as they had been collecting claims for meetings, given free accommodation, feeding as well as transport allowances while using university official cars and other facilities.
