Lawmaker Wants Econet Probed

A member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Saturday Micheal Akpan has called on the House to commence the probing of Econet,a major GSM operator in the state.

The probe, he said, was as a result of the substandard communication services rendered to the people of the state by Econet inspite of the huge investment made into the network by the Akwa Ibom State government.

The lawmaker said that Econet was cheating the people of the state through its substandard services.

He faulted Econet's system of billing subscribers as well as its voicemail system.

Akpan also alleged gross inefficiency against Econet for its out of service area message which he said Econet reels out even when the person you are calling is sitting right next to you.

The lawmaker urged the Assembly to summon the management of Econet for explanations of its modus operandi.

He decried what he described as the fraudulent activities of Econet when the company is expected to embark on projects that would uplift the people and the state.

The lawmaker called for the establishment of the regional office of Econet in the state in recognition of the huge investment made in it by the state in order to create job opportunities for the indigenes.

In his remarks at the sitting, the speaker, Chief Nelson Effiong, urged companies operating in the state to be alive to their responsibilities and put the interest of the people at the forefront of their activities.
