From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi
Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Suleiman Adamu, has enjoined governments at all levels to give enhanced welfare packages to teachers, and provide teaching aids to enable students to get qualitative education in the country.
Adamu, who played host to principals of Federal Unity Colleges in Nigeria at his place in Bauchi described education as the backbone of any meaningful and sustainable development of any nation or society.
The Emir who is the chairman of the state traditional council also challenged the wealthy in the society to assist in the funding of the education sector as government alone could not shoulder such responsibilities.
He stressed the need for combined efforts to salvage the educational sector from total collapse, saying that "we cannot progress without an enlightened citizenry and we would not have enlightened community without education, therefore, there is need for people to be educated".
While acknowledging the resolve of the state government to place high premium on developing the education sector in the state, in addition to paying greater attention to the recruitment and training of teachers as well as provision of instructional materials to schools, he said this would pave the way for a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
Earlier in her speech, the leader of the team, Hajia Aishatu Doko, said they were in Bauchi for their annual general meeting and were in the palace to seek for the blessing of the royal father.
She also expressed appreciation to the Emir for playing his fatherly role to all the people of the Emirate irrespective of their backgrounds and for ensuring peaceful co-existence among the various ethnic and religious affiliations.
