Mystery Over Abia North Senate Seat: ANPP Accuses Aso Rock of Bribery

The lingering intrigues and power play shrouding the re-election or non-election of Senator Adolphus Wabara on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Abia North Senatorial district apparently deepened over the weekend. This comes on the heels of the reported declaration by INEC of Elder Imo of the opposition All BiafraNigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) as the real winner of the April 12 polls. THISDAY also gathered that President Olusegun Obasanjo has sent a letter of congratulations to Imo. But Wabara was at the PDP national secretariat yesterday seeking to be adopted as the candidate for the office of the Senate President raising questions about his status. There were speculations in Abuja that INEC might have given him a certificate of victory. (This Day)

The equivalent of a full tanker is being illegally siphoned off every week. By Anthony Goldman, Michael Peel and David White. The humid creeks and dense mangrove swamps of the Niger delta have been a source of illicit trade since the days of slavery. Now a new form of smuggling is threatening the stability of Nigeria's vast oil sector as well as putting pressure on President Olusegun Obasanjo, sworn in today for a second four-year term. (This Day)

Despite the attempt at reforms by the Police in recent times, many have lost hope in its ability to effectively police the country. Not only have killings increased, defaulters escape the wrath of the law, therefore emboldening evil doers to continue in their untoward ways. The assassination in Dec. 2001 of the former Atty Gen. and Min. of Justice, Chief Bola Ige and the politics surrounding the case leaves much to be desired. (This Day)
