All is set for the election of Senator Adolphus Wabara and Hon. Aminu Bello Masari as the new Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives when the National Assembly is inaugurated today by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Wabar

a from Abia South senatorial district and Masari representing Katsina State were last night endorsed by the enlarged caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which has an overwhelming majority in both houses of the National Assembly. To ensure the emergence of Wabara, whose election has been mired in controversy, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday recognised him as the duly elected senator representing Abia South senatorial district of Abia state. The move by INEC paved the way for the leadership of PDP in adopting Wabara as its candidate for the Senate Presidency.

Former Health Minister Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti is dead. He was aged 76. Family sources who confirmed news of his death, said he died yesterday in his hotel room in London while on an unspecified professional engagement. The probable cause of the death of the renown professor of paediatrics was sketchy at press time, but he was believed to have slumped in his room. (Vanguard)


Determined to refocus the nation's judiciary towards ensuring it plays its strategic role as an impartial arbiter, the Chief Justice of the Federation, Muhammadu Lawal Uwais, yesterday told 41 newly appointed judges to imbibe the principle of transparency.
