Police discover bombs in Ilorin

From Abdu Laro, in Ilorin

Barely 23 days to the April polls, the Kwara State Police Command yesterday announced the discovery of four locally made time bombs and 34 pieces of Sieramic explosives close to a quarry site in the outskirts of Ilorin, the state capital.

Briefing journalists on the discovery at the state police command headquarters, the Police Commissioner, Alhaji Mohammed Dikko Abubakar who described it as the greatest achievement of the police in recent times said, "we are on the track of the owners of the explosive items."

He said a public spirited citizen alerted the police about the suspected bombs kept close to a quarry site and the police bomb disposal unit swung into action and found "four litres of white plastic emulsion paint containers of improved explosive devices and 34 pieces of sieramic explosives hidden at the site."

The discovery of the ex-plosives, which police sources said could bring down any solid building is coming four months after the bombing of the Ilorin based National Pilot newspaper though some suspects arrested in connection with the blast have been charged to court and released on bail.

Alhaji Abubakar also disclosed that 15 suspects were in police net in connection with the last political violence which erupted in some parts of Ilorin leading to the death of one Moshood Gidado and the destruction of vehicles and property.

He said the police recorded only one death in the violence sparked off by one Isiaka Bolakale Ishola, a member of the ANPP of No. 20, Oke-Sajo Bolanta Street, Ilorin who invited youths suspected to be political thugs to remove PDP posters but met a stiff resistance from PDP supporters during which guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons were used.

Three other suspects, Ishaka Saka, Abu Shaibu and one Yinusa have been arrested for unlawful possession of fire-arms at Oja-Oba, Idi Ape area of Ilorin, while a national of Benin Republic, Jatto Isiaka, a disabled owner of an illegal arms factory found in possession of 34 locally made guns and pistols is also in police net.

The commissioner warned that the police will deal ruthlessly with anybody breaching the peace.
