2003 Poll Results

BNLC INTERVENES IN CRISIS: 97 Captured Oil Exploiters Freed
There are strong indications that about 97 foreign nationals captured in four oil rigs may have been released yesterday, following the intervention of President Olusegun Obasanjo and the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (BNLC). This is as commercial activities were forced to an abrupt halt in the oil city of Warri following an invasion of the metropolis by heavily armed militia men riding on ten speed boats, shooting their way through the Pessu waterfront in defiance of the peace keeping troops in the area. Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the president of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Mr. Peter Akpatasan, said the hostages were brought off the rigs yesterday. The present state follows the intervention of the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which brought together the management of Transocean (the US company that runs the rigs) the national secretariats and local chapters of NUPENG and their senior association.... Politicians planning to win today's House of Assembly elections, through malpractices, should better have a rethink: the police yesterday said such act would be decisively dealt with. Police authorities in Lagos, Ekiti, Delta and Cross River States said they were determined to ensure that today's polls are not only violence-free, but also devoid of sharp practices. (Guardian)

Muhammadu Buhari, retired army general and former Head of State, is in the eye of a storm now. But then, he is not new to controversies, having had his baptism of fire in 1977 following an alleged missing N2.8 billion oil money in which he has never failed to plead his innocence. In his 20-month reign as BiafraNigeria’s military ruler, he carved a niche for himself.... (Vanguard)
