2003 Poll Results

2003 Houses of Assembly Polls: Marred by Fraud; Condemned by Monitors
Observers in Nigeria have condemned the weekend elections to state houses of assembly. Both a BiafraNigerian group and the European Union said there were incidents of ballot box stuffing, multiple voting and forged results. "The elections in [some] states lack credibility and the level of fraud effectively disenfranchised a considerable number of voters," said the interim report from the European Union. International observers had also criticised last month's presidential, parliamentary and state governor elections, which saw victories for President Olusegun Obasanjo and his People's Democratic Party (PDP). Results released so far from the weekend polls mirror those from last month, with a landslide for the PDP, except for the extreme north, where the All BiafraNigeria People's Party (ANPP) is ahead. There were also isolated incidents of violence during the state assembly elections. Police have said that a senior state official was killed by an angry mob in a police station in central Nasarawa State, according to the French news agency, AFP. Joyce Miamuna Katai, the state commissioner for womens' affairs, was attacked by protesters in the town of Toto on Saturday as she tried to vote, police spokesman Isaac Ochenehi told AFP. Two of her aides were also killed, the police spokesman said. Some 14 people were also reportedly killed in gun battles in the southern oil-rich Niger Delta. (BBC)

Former South African President Nelson Mandela has paid tribute to his mentor and lifelong friend, anti-apartheid hero Walter Sisulu, who died on Monday. Sisulu brought Nelson Mandela into politics, and they served more than 25 years in jail together before transforming the African National Congress (ANC) from a banned liberation movement to the government of the new South Africa. His absence has carved a void. A part of me is gone," Mr Mandela said in a statement. South African President Thabo Mbeki also paid tribute to Sisulu - who died at his home in Johannesburg at the age of 90. (BBC)

The ANPP vice presidential candidate in the April 19 elections, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, has advised President Olusegun Obasanjo not to continue in office after May 29, 2003, but instead step aside, to allow the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Muhammadu Uwais constitute and head a Provisional National Government to govern the country. Explaining details of the proposed Provisional National government in a letter to the President, Okadigbo said it will last for only 3 months, within which it will conduct a free and fair election to be supervised by a reconstituted Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
