Na'Abba: Appeals for Forgiveness, Understanding
In what looks like a valedictory speech, the out-going Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ghali Na'Abba yesterday appealed to his colleagues for understanding over his performance as the presiding officer. He said his actions had been motivated by the interest of the legislature and the concept of separation of powers. Na'Abba made the appeal as the Clerk of the National As-sembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Salim, approved the appointment of new clerks for the Senate and House. Also yesterday, the House rejected a motion by Hon. Chidi Duru calling for probe of the general elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to a member, who spoke to THISDAY after the executive session of the House yesterday, Na'Abba was said to have appealed to his colleagues not to take offence at some of his actions while in office. "The Speaker in the executive session asked for forgiveness from us his colleagues. He asked us to forgive him for whatever misgivings during his tenure as Speaker. Also, he said he has forgiven those who offended him. He said that some of them had come to him asking for forgiveness and he said that he has forgiven them, hence he is asking those whom he offended to forgive him," the source quoted the Speaker as saying.
