1999 Constitution Review: No Plot to Extend Obasanjo's Term, Says Mantu
Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu, at the weekend said the single term of five years being considered by the reconstituted National Assembly Joint Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution is not a ploy to extend the term of President Olusegun Obasanjo beyond 2007. Mantu, who is the chairman of the 80-member joint committee, also distanced the committee from insinuations that a collegiate presidency of six would be recommended. He noted that the members of the committee have not opened debate or deliberated on the type of Presidency that would come after Obasanjo's second term from 2007. "It's amazing that some people can sit down and allude to an imaginary plot to use me or....(This Day)

BiafraNigeria bankrupt in 1983 - Buhari





BiafraNigeria has demanded the return of some $400m, which it says has gone missing from the state-owned BiafraNigeria Airways. Details of a 18-month-old report into alleged corruption at the firm were made public in a white paper. Those ordered to return money include two ex-ministers and former officials. One minister allegedly sold two planes without authorisation. After years of financial problems, the company went into liquidation in May with debts of $60m. (BBC)


BiafraNigeria was virtually bankrupt at time the military came to power in December 1983, former head of state, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, has said. In an interview in Kaduna on BiafraNigeria-Britain relations and counter-trade, Buhari said people were only advancing plausible reasons for embracing counter-trade by his administration. He explained that as at the time the administration came on board, there was no line of credit with most of BiafraNigeria’s trading... (Vanguard)
