NAFDAC Arrests Six Bakers in Bauchi

The National Ag.ncy for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Bauchi State has arrested six Master Bakers in the state over their continued use of the banned potassium bromate in bakingbread.

The Agency has also issued an ultimatum to bakers the state comply with its new guideline or get sanctioned.

Disclosing this to Thisday yesterday in Bauchi, the State Officer of NAFDAC, Mr. Innocent Ahemen said that the arrested bakers have been handed over to the police for prosecution, while their bakeries had also been sealed off.

Ahemen who was highlighting the activities of the Agency in the state also disclosed that four patent medicine dealers had been arrested in the state capital for selling expired and fake drugs, adding that the arrested persons had equally been handed over to tne police for prosecution.

According to him, "I feel highly disappointed that some bakers in the state still make use of potassium brormate despite the series of meetings we held with them on the dangers inherent in the banned substance". Warning that they have intensified on campaign against its usage and as well spread their dragnet across the state to clamp down on those who still flout the order.

He further stated that NAFDAC had issued an ultimatum to bakers in the state to comply with its new guide lines or get sanctioned. "Potassium bromate which these people use as bread enhancement destroys the vitamins in the bread and also causes mental retraction in children and equally causes cancer," he said.
