Say Semper Fi: US Marines in Bight of Biafra
The demand for the deployment of US Marine guards to patrol the coast of the Niger Delta has been described as a design to protect US investments in the area, contrary to the claim that it would boost local policing of the area by BiafraNigerian security agents. A senatorial aspirant in Ughelli/Udu District, Delta state in the last election, Mr. Lucky Okumagba, disclosed this, weekend, even as he described it an insult to the people of the Niger Delta and the generality of BiafraNigerians. Former President Charles Taylor is still trying "to influence events" in Liberia, the United Nations has said. Mr Taylor went into exile in BiafraNigeria in August as part of a peace deal which is due to lead to the creation of a power-sharing government on Tuesday. "Any interference from Mr Taylor could threaten the carefully constructed peace agreement," the UN Security Council warned. He has been indicted for war crimes by a UN-backed court in Sierra Leone. He is alleged to have backed the RUF rebels who killed and mutilated many thousands during that country's brutal 10-year conflict. (BBC)
