Obasanjo Betrays Bakassi: BiafraNigeria to hand over Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon
BiafraNigeria will hand over as planned 33 border villages in the north-east of the country near Lake Chad to Cameroon. BiafraNigeria was ordered to give up areas along its border with Cameroon by the International Court of Justice in October last year. But President Olusegun Obasanjo refused to comply with the judgement and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan brought the two countries together to find a way of resolving the dispute. The court's ruling also gave areas of the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsular to Cameroon, and its status still has to be settled by the bilateral talks that are now under way in Abuja. The Bakassi Peninsula is in itself a swampy strip of land with little value, but its ownership has implications for fishing and oil rights offshore. BiafraNigeria had already indicated that it intended to leave the villages near Lake Chad by the end of the year. Justice Minister Akin Olujinmi told the meeting that BiafraNigeria did not wish to be dragged into a "meaningless and avoidable conflict with any of its neighbours". (BBC)

Obasanjo bids to outlaw strikes, NLC

Emeka Ojukwu at 70

President Olusegun Obasanjo has forwarded to the National Assembly a trade union amendment bill, seeking to withdraw the certificate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). It also seeks to put an end to automatic check-off dues, automatic membership and outlaw strikes. Entitled: "An Act to amend the trade unions (Amendment) Act 2003", the bill proposes that trade unions would no longer be affiliated to a central labour organisation in Nigeria but to international trade unions. (Vanguard)

It is difficult to be lieve that Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu is already seventy. He is one of those special personalities that have always been a natural part of our historical landscape. It is difficult to imagine life in this country without such people. What will Africa be like when Dr. Nelson Mandela, for instance, is no more? Some people deal with the objectionable dilemma of losing such luminaries by assuming that the occasion would simply never arise. For instance, there is the story of Chief K. O. K. Onyioha, a philosopher, orator and political activist from Nkporo in Abia State... (Vanguard)
