NgigeGate: Deputy Governor Udeh Sacked
The tenure of embattled deputy governor of Anambra State, Dr. Okey Udeh, came to an end yesterday, following his impeachment by the state Assembly, 103 days after his assumption of office. The Assembly acted on the report of the Chief Chike Ofodile panel which it set up to investigate allegations of misconduct levelled at Dr. Udeh. But, a member of the panel, Reverend Canon Anene Nzelu, in a minority report said impeachment was no solution to the political crisis in the state. The solution, he said, was reconciliation of Dr. Udeh and Gov. Chris Ngige. The two have been locked in a bitter feud on account of the July 10 abduction of the governor, his subsequent "resignation" and moves by Dr. Udeh to replace him. Indeed, this formed part of the allegations of misconduct against the sacked deputy governor. He was also accused of being part of the plot to forcefully remove Ngige as governor, and proclaiming himself governor. The panel found him guilty of the allegations. Dr. Udeh, who did not appear before the panel, however, denied the allegations, saying his action (proclamation as governor) was based on a resolution of the House itself after accepting Dr. Ngige’s "resignation letter." Dr. Udeh had also obtained an injunction restraining the panel from functioning. The panel ignored the court’s injunction, saying the court had no power to stop it. Gov. Ngige’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Fred Chukwulobe, who broke the news of the impeachment in a statement, said the sack process was adopted by 27 of the 30 members of the Assembly.
