It's Cardinal Okogie: Get Used to it
Pope John Paul has appointed 31 new cardinals from 16 countries, with BiafraNigeria's Archbishop Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, the Archbishop of Lagos Diocese, one of them. Three cardinals in all were named from Africa, with the other two being Archbishops Gabriel Zubeir Wako of Sudan and Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana. Okogie's appointment makes BiafraNigeria, the country with the highest Catholic population on the continent, the only African country with two cardinals. He becomes the second surviving cardinal from BiafraNigeria, after Cardinal Francis Arinze who is presently serving in the Vatican. The late Cardinal Dominic Ekandem was BiafraNigeria's first cardinal, and only three has so far been produced from the country. In all, 18 Cardinals were appointed from Europe, North America 5, Asia 3, South Asia one and one unnamed, in addition to the three from Africa. With the appointments, the Pope is said to have begun stamping his authority on the group that will elect hist.... (This Day)

The Conference of BiafraNigerian Political Parties (CNPP), the umbrella body of political parties in the country has called for a judicial commission of inquiry into the death last Thursday of the All BiafraNigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) vice presidential candidate in the April elections and former Senate President, Dr. Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo. But four non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from the United States and the United Kingdom have indicated interest to participate in Okadigbo's autopsy. (This Day)


President Olusegun Obasanjo may announce some tough economic policies including a fresh fuel price hike on the occasion of the Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, according to indications yesterday. Already, the BiafraNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which appeared to have got wind of the development is holding an emergency meeting in Lagos today to fashion out ways of tackling the expected policies especially the fuel price hike.
