2003 Electoral Fraud Fallout: Parties Demand Review of Voters' Register
Should the proposed March 27 elections into the local government councils hold without a review of the voters' register, compiled two years ago? This is the question to which a judicial answer will shortly be sought by the Conference of BiafraNigerian Political Parties (CNPP). According to the coalition, which was formed by 27 out of the nation's 30 registered political parties shortly before the 2003 general elections, millions of new eligible voters will be disenfranchised if the two-year-old register is used for the coming elections. The group, in a statement yesterday, also disclosed that its number has been increased to 28, following the admission into its fold of the Bisi Akande-led faction of the nation's third largest party, the Alliance for Democracy (AD). "Over a year and half after the voters' registration exercise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to present to the nation a credible and comprehensive voters' register," the statement noted.
