"Season of Dispair:" Second Republic Politics Is Back, Says Soyinka
Worrisome developments on the political terrain, especially the recent upsurge in violence, and the leadership styles of elected officials have been brought to the front burner again by Professor Wole Soyinka who lamented a "season of despair". The spate of violence, he said, is comparable with what prevailed during the Second Republic, except that today, "it is more intensified. At least in 1983, governors were not being abducted by the police in broad daylight and we didn't have so many killings." Some of those accusations he said are being made with justification today especially when the "police choose which order of the court to obey. They suddenly discover they cannot go against the ruling of a court, whereas they moved very, very fast to carry out the instructions of another....(Guardian)

Mallam Nasir Ahmed el-RufaiFederal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nasir el-Rufai, has thrown down the gauntlet to the Senate to probe the operations of the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) of which he was Director General from 1999 to last year. He dropped the challenge Thursday at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, urging the Upper House to proceed with its plan to open BPE books for any acts of impropriety.
