War on the Platuau: My battle with Dariye; 'He was my boy but he messed up'- Manttu
Battle for the soul of Pleatues State between Deputy Senate President, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu and Governor Joshua Dariye may rage longer as the former has said the governor betrayed him and let the state into an unwanted war.
Speaking in an interview with elendureports.com Mantu said Dariye was a boy he made relevant in politics but turned back to betray the trust and blindly allowed sectarian violence to take the state through its worst time.
According to him, Dariye was an unknown bunch whom he made relevant by making him the governor.
He, however, said he was sad that the governor turned deaf ears and blind eye while the state of emergency which he said, was his greates political achievement in the state.
"The issue of Dariye... We parted ways when the state became ungovernable. Plateau State was indeed the best place to live in Nigeria. The state was the most accomodating, religions tolerance, ethnic tolerance, we knew no difference particularly Jos where some of us were privileged to grow up. It was also cosmopolitan. All of a sudden, we now have somebody who destroyed all these legacies overnight, religions hatred, ethnic hatred, people who have lived together for centuries started killing each other because the government was promoting it," he said.
Putting blame for the section violence in the state on the shoulders of Gov. Dariye, Senator Mantu said, "the first one was in 2001. It was bad enough for us, everybody was on his knees praying to God for us not to witness that kind of thing again.
Unfortunately, that was even just the beginning. In 2004, we witnessed the most catastrophic disaster, carnage of the highest order, over 50,000 people (not chickens suffering from bird flu) were deliberately killed.
"Do not forget that this man was so irresponsible that when the thing was at its heat, he left here and went abroad and went and spent about a month and everyday, anyone watching CNN, whereever they were in the world, saw what was happening in Plateau. CNN had no news at that time only about Plateau.
"He did not come back and even when he came back, he went to the stadium to watch football instead of going to see what happened. Can you imagine? And you say because he is my friend, I will not part way with him.
"If you ask me, the most important legislative duty I have done, I will say using my position to declare a state of emergency is the greatest thing that has happened to my life because as soon as that was done, the killings were stopped," he said.
Mantu, also distanced himself from allegation that he benefitted from the state’s ecological fund which Dariye is alleged to have embezzled arguing that Dariye’s statement that he (Dariye) got N10 million from the fund was an insult.
"That is another insult, if he went and collected N1.6 billion and which I must have been responsible for him to get and he gives me N10 million. Don’t you think I will give him a dirty slap? What nonsense are you talking about? Does it make sense that I will just take N10 million out of N1.6 billion? He is very stupid," Mantu added.

I have followed very closely the events with Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State. I think that what is happening with Gov Dariye and his money laundering saga is nothing new among our political leaders. What is new is how quick their fiancial benefactors, such as the Deputy Senate President Alhaji Mantu who is also his godfather are quick to distance themselves from the monster they created. We continue to observed how Gov. Dariye has being violating the rule of law by not cooperating with the EFCC and other authorities empowered to investigate his illegal financial activities. This is the same pattern of behavior that is being exhibited by Alhaji Mantu and his cohorts at the federal level. Don't forget that he planted Gov. Dariye in the government house in the Plateau State capital to represent their selfish interest, but when things go bad, Alhaji Mantu quickly says "He was my boy but he messed up". I am quite convinced that Alhaji Mantu will be used by President Obasanjo and his henchmen, and dumped to be investigated by the EFCC, and eventually serve time in jail. He may be loyal to President Obasanjo, but Obasanjo has his own agenda. GOD bless Nigeria.
