‘Peoples PDP’ holds congress in Lagos Saturday; It’s illegal, says PDP spokesman

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), known as ‘People’s PDP’, has rejected the congresses held nationwide last Saturday by the ruling party, and has fixed its own congress for Saturday in Lagos.

From Abdullahi Bego

A PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) member, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Rimi, who is leader of the People’s PDP announced the pending alternative congress in Kano yesterday.
In a swift reaction yesterday, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Mr. John Odey, said it would be illegal for the group to hold any congress because it is not a registered political party.
Odey said of the group, which he described as an association, insists on holding the said congress, the govern-ment would move against them because the action amounts to an offence.
The spokesman of Rimi, Alhaji Gambo Muhammad Abdullahi Danpass who disclosed the Lagos congress to newsmen also said that another congress would be held in Kaduna at a later time.
Danpass stated that the congresses held by the PDP on November 5 were just a mere selection, and according to him, majority of the party members were not informed or allowed to participate in the congresses.
The PDP chieftain who described the congresses as yet another plot for Obasanjo’s 3rd term bid, stated that they will mount opposition against it before the 2007 election.
“Alhaji Rimi faction or rather People’s PDP will never support any move that was con-trary to the wishes of the majo-rity of Nigerians.
“We intend to hold our own congress in Lagos and later in Kaduna states with a view to mapping out strategies on how to fish out Obasanjo from Aso Rock come 2007,” Danpass stressed.
It would be recalled that the Kano state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its congress under the leadership of the immediate past state governor, Dr. Rabi’u Mu-sa Kwankwaso.
Former Senator Mas’ud el-Jibril Doguwa emerged as the new party chairman, Alhaji Ali Bukar Makoda, secretary and Alhaji Surajo Sani Marshall as financial secretary.
Other elected executives are Alhaji Garba Sa’id Dala, deputy chairman, Hajia Binta Sayyadi, women leader, Alhaji Ali Tana, youth leader, among others.
When contacted yesterday for reaction, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Mr. John Odey said the ‘People’s PDP’ is an association, and does not have the legal rights to hold a congress.
He said such actions would not be tolerated because nobody is greater than the party, adding that whoever wants to flout party laws would be punished.
“The laws would frown at any organisation that is not registered as a political party to operate as one,” he said.
He described the congresses held last Saturday as successful and peaceful,” which he said was as a result of the dynamic response of the party to crisis.
The party, he said, will not compromise responding to interest of members, just as it would not tolerate indiscipline. chairman, Hajia Binta Sayyadi, women leader, Alhaji Ali Tana, youth leader, among others.
