Govt Sources N3.2 b To Pay Sacked Ajaokuta Workers
FROM ISA ABDULSALAMI, JOS AND JUMOBI ADEGBITE, LAGOS
GOVERNOR Joshua Dariye of Plateau State has appealed to the armed forces to give civilians the opportunity to develop a lasting political process by learning from past mistakes.
He said politicians must be given the opportunity to operate from a safe and secure political environment which promotes continuity, healthy rivalry and perfection of the system.
Dariye made the call yesterday during the wreath-laying ceremony of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the state Cenotaph.
He said it was unfortunate that the Biafra-Nigerian civil war was partly caused by military incursion into politics, which he said was an aberration in civilised societies. He, however, praised the military for remaining neutral since their disengagement from politics.
And in Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu called on the federal government to find a lasting solution to the issue of military pensions.
Tinubu, who attended the Armed Force Remembrance Day Celebration at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, said the men who sacrificed their life in building the nation deserves to be well treated.
According to him, the continued sense of discipline and dedication shown by retired military personnel deserves commendation from the people and government.
Saying that his administration will continue to assist retired officers like any other citizen, Tinubu noted that with policies like free education, payment of examination fees, free health programmes and the rehabilitation of roads, they stand to benefit immensely.
Tinubu further cited the expansion and reconstruction of the road in front of the arcade and the former Defence Headquarter, saying he would continue to actively support the military even though it is a federal responsibility.
