Unconfirmed reports said at least four persons were feared killed even as residents at the barracks began a mass exodus from the area.
The incident which occurred at about 6.30 p.m. affected a number of residential quarters and offices within the barracks and environs.
When THISDAY visited the scene at about 7 p.m, thick smoke still enveloped the area while armed soldiers and police made frantic efforts to control the situation.
The 41 Division Engineering Commander, Brigadier-Gen. Augustine Ihejirika, described the explosion as localised adding that, "the explosions have subsided."
In a live television broadcast Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi at 8.05 p.m. yesterday, asked Kaduna residents not to panic as various agencies of government had been deployed to handle the problem.
Makarfi said that the army authorities had begun to evacuate unexploded ammunitions from the depot.
A similar explosion at Ikeja Military Cantonment, Lagos in January 2002 caused the death of over 1,000 people who out of panic got drowned in a canal.
