PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday met with members of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Ohaneze, Ndi’ Igbo, Yoruba Council of Elders, Afenefere and Ijaw National Congress reaffirming that the National Political reform conference is aimed at strengthening the Nigerian federation.
According to him, the planned National Conference has nothing to do with the false rumour of his plan to actualize his third term in office as some Nigerians mischievously are spreading.
The Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mrs. Oluremi Oyo who stated this while briefing State House press corps after the closed door meeting, explained that President Obasanjo reaffirmed that he has no any intension to extend his tenure beyond 2007 as people sentimentally speculate.
She said: “Basically, the conference is aimed at discussing and reaching consensus among all members on arrangement for the governance, the management of the affairs of Nigeria so as to strengthen the Nigerian federation.
Mrs. Oyo further said, all the representatives of the socio-cultural groups in the country have the idea of the conference, who include eminent Nigerians such as Gen. Adebayo (rtd), Ge. I. B. M. Haruna (rtd), Prof. Joe Irukwu, Alhaji Gbenga Kaka, Dr. Tunji Otegbeye, Dr. T. A. T. Allison and Prof. Okolo.
“Importantly, the president called the representatives of the socio-cultural groups who of course you know are reasonable people in the general horizon of Nigeria to brief them of what he has in mind as regards what National Political Reform Conference is all about,” she pointed out.
The senior special assistant however said President Obasanjo made it clear to them that it is a duty to all Nigerians to ensure good governance in the country as well as to ensure that there is unity in the country not only in political landscape, but to have unity of vision.
“As the meeting progressed”, she added, “each member of the socio-cultural group reaffirmed his commitment to the indivisibility of Nigeria and also commended Obasanjo for his vision and commitment to ensure Nigerian people dialogue,” she said.
Mrs. Oyo stated that the meeting which was the second of its kind in three days was to make consultation as regards the conference while the idea of the consultation is to encourage all to contribute to the success of the conference.
