New role for monarchs underway, says Mr. President

PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday in Abuja assured all traditional rulers in the country that very soon an identified and distinct role would be provided for them in order to sustain and strengthen the nation's culture and traditions.

From KABIRU YUSUF, Abuja

According to the president who gave this assurance when he received a delegation of a 41-member delegation of traditional rulers led by the newly appointed Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammad Iliyasu Bashir in his office, explained that the much talked about role for traditional rulers to play in nation building will soon be resolved.

Chief Obasanjo who told the emir that he occupied a significant position in the hierarchy of the traditional institutions in the North in particular and in the whole federation in general, challenged him to be a bridge of peace and understanding.

President Obasanjo welcomed the new emir's confirmation that steps were being taken to restore harmony and peaceful co-existence in the emirate, pointing out that for Nigeria to be at peace, every component of the country must have peace as peace is indivisible.

"Only our culture and traditions are authentically ours, so we should preserve the traditional authorities who are the custodians. Therefore government would soon identify a specific role for them in order to sustain and strengthen the nation's culture and traditions,'' he said.

In his words: "I am a farmer, and without roads, water, transportation and electricity you can't succeed in agriculture which is the main occupation of the people. My administration will continue to provide these social amenities to Nigerians.''

Earlier, the new emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashir, had told the president that he recognized the interdependence of all ethnic and religious groups in the country and was determined to ensure peace and harmony.

Alhaji Bashir further informed that steps had been taken to ensure peaceful co-existence in his emirate, Gwandu in particular, in view of the circumstances surrounding his ascension to the throne.

The emir then commended President Obasanjo for approving the construction of six bridges in the state and called for the completion of dam projects to enable year-round farming in Kebbi state.
